Aged Garlic is a key ingredient in our Daily Immune Enhancer with Antioxidant Properties product
Garlic is considered by herbalists all over the world to be one the most important and effective medicinal herbs. Thousands of studies have shown that consuming garlic has significant benefits of lowering cholesterol and blood sugar levels, decreasing the risk of heart attack and stroke and inhibiting the development of blood clots and cancerous tumors. It has also been used to prevent atherosclerosis, colds, flu, coughs, bronchitis, gastrointestinal problems and menstrual pain. Additionally, garlic is also considered an effective antioxidant that can boost the body's immune system and may even help prevent certain cancers, such as colon cancer. It has been used as both food and medicine in many cultures for at least 3,000 years.

One bulb of garlic contains approximately 70 active health-promoting ingredients, and in particular a substance called Alliin, or Allicin once the bulb is crushed. Allician is a sulphur compound that destroys many parasites, fungi, and viruses, including Helicobacter Pylori (a cause of peptic ulcers), herpes, and Candida. Due to the large amounts of Allicin found in garlic, it is considered to act as a natural antibiotic, providing immune system support against bacterial, viral and fungal infection. Additionally, some studies have shown garlic to be particularly effective in preventing recurrent yeast infections and in the treatment of ear infections.
Many publications have shown that garlic can be used to treat hypertension and other conditions that lead to cardiovascular disease. Studies have shown that regular use can lower blood pressure, cholesterol and in particular LDL (or the bad kind of cholesterol that leads to plague formation) and triglyceride levels by more than 10%. Decreased levels of cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood reduce the chance of blood platelets from becoming too “sticky” and forming blood clots.
Taking garlic supplements could help lower the risk of developing cancer. The Allicin in garlic has a protective effect on the stomach, preventing the proliferation of Helicobacter pylori, a bacteria that can cause digestive illnesses including gastritis and peptic ulcer disease, and has been strongly linked to the development of gastrointestinal cancer. Garlic also helps protect against breast, colon, and esophageal cancer.
Garlic may also be helpful to patients undergoing chemotherapy by helping to prevent the depletion of glutathione and the increased free radical activity that accompanies chemotherapy, which can damage heart and liver tissues. Note: individuals undergoing chemotherapy should consult with their doctor before taking garlic supplementation of any kind, as garlic can increase the bleeding experienced as a result of chemotherapy.
An additional benefit of garlic is the promotion of phagocytosis, the ability of white blood cells to fight infections, and stimulating other immune cells such as macrophages providing immune support in the fight against the AIDS virus.
Side Effects and Interactions
Aside from the smell, those taking garlic supplements in general have reported no severe side effects.
There have been reports of garlic intensifying the effects of a number of pharmaceutical products, such as blood thinners, antibiotics, antifungals, steroids, and anti-inflammatories. Individuals taking theses medications should consult with a physician before consuming large amounts of garlic.
Dosage and Administration
The most common form of garlic supplementation is in capsules, especially for those with an aversion to its odor in raw form. In capsule form, a commonly recommended safe dosage is up to 1,000 – 3,000 mg daily.
