Elderberry is commonly used as a food product for wine, pie, jelly, lemonade and an assortment of other food products. Its leaves were traditionally used for pain relief and applied to wounds to promote healing. Other traditional uses include treatment of infections, skin conditions, and coughing.

The active contituents in Elderberry include flavonoids, such as Quercetin, which are believed to be responsible for Elderberry's therapeutic effects. Some of the benefits include the ability to recover more rapidly from the flu and as an effective anti-inflammatory that aids in the treatment of herpes simplex (cold sores) and influenza. Additionally, these flavonoids have properties that are powerful antioxidants and protect cells against damage.
Side Effects and Interactions
The safe internal use of elderberry is limited to the use of the dried flowers or syrups made from the ripe berries. There are no well-known drug interactions with elderberry.
